In July 2017, the Ugandan National Drug Authority (NDA) Board authorized the stocking of injectable contraceptives in private drug shops in 20 select districts.
The East African Legislative Assembly committee recently conducted public hearings on the East African Community (EAC) Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Bill 2017 in its five member countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda). The committee, which held public hearings for Tanzania on Feb 22nd in Dar es Salaam, agreed to integrate recommendations on various sections of the bill from the recently-established Tanzania Youth and Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (TAYARH) Coalition and Advance Family Planning (AFP) local partners.

Results from the Performance Monitoring and Accountability 2020 (PMA2020) survey in Uganda show improvement in use of family planning services in the country over the last few years. The contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) increased from 30% in 2011 to 35% in 2015; accompanied by a decline in the total fertility rate.

The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Health, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Uganda Health Marketing Group (UHMG) on January 30, 2015 to implement an alternative distribution strategy. The strategy is designed to improve the handling, storage, and distribution of family planning commodities to the private sector over the next five years.

On November 27, 2014 the Government of Uganda launched a costed implementation plan to scale up family planning programming and investments from 2015 to 2020. The plan serves as a roadmap to achieve the country’s vison for universal access to family planning and for middle-income country status by 2020. Hon. Sarah Opendi, Minister of State for Health, represented the Ugandan Prime Minister at the launch, and announced, “We have been crawling, we have hopped, and now we can run.”

In April 2014, 80 experts in program and policy development and implementation met in Nairobi Kenya to focus on actions needed to increase access to the widest possible range of contraceptive methods in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Convened by Advance Family Planning with a national, regional and international planning committee, the meeting provided a platform for exchange of key technical resources, research findings, shared experiences, and the impediments and opportunities for large-scale uptake of proven interventions.
