In Memoriam: Inne Silviane
The Advance Family Planning initiative remembers and celebrates our colleague and friend Inne Silviane whom we lost on May 22, 2021, after a long battle with her health conditions. Inne leaves behind her husband, six children, and three grandchildren.
On February 4, 2021, Dr. Hasto Wardoyo, Chairperson of the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN), reaffirmed Indonesian government support for expanding advocacy as it formulates new commitments to the Family Planning 2030 partnership. The statement came during a virtual event to recognize progress made under Family Planning 2020 and conclude the decade-long advocacy partnership under Advance Family Planning (AFP).
The governments of Ambon, Kapuas Hulu, Karawang, Kuningan, and Tual districts committed to sustain their advocacy activities when the Advance Family Planning (AFP) initiative completes its mentoring and assistance in October 2018.
In November 2017, four key health organizations in Indonesia issued a joint letter resolving a major training and certification barrier for midwives’ provision of intrauterine devices (IUD) and implants.
In June 2017, Indonesia’s provincial government of West Kalimantan allocated IDR 470 million (US $35,300) of its own funds to scale up 14 family planning advocacy district working groups in 2018—12 of which are newly formed. This win for sustainable, locally-funded advocacy builds on years of efforts to improve information and services for couples in West Kalimantan.
In September, the Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) partnership’s Rapid Response Mechanism awarded US $75,000 to Advance Family Planning local partner Yayasan Cipta Cara Padu Indonesia (YCCP). The award will support YCCP in engaging local leaders to implement the government’s “Kampung KB” program.
This month, 13 Indonesian district heads and mayors from districts and municipalities signed a joint commitment to revitalize, sustain, and support their local family planning program. The joint commitment illustrates the lasting support of local leaders that have implemented the Advance Family Planning (AFP) advocacy initiative and the Improving Contraceptive Method Mix (ICMM) project funded by USAID and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Advance Family Planning (AFP) took the 2016 International Conference on Family Planning’s theme of “Global Commitments, Local Actions” to heart by conducting a workshop for action-oriented advocacy entitled "Fostering Locally-Driven Advocacy for Family Planning." In the four days leading up to the conference, 22 family planning advocates from 14 countries learned about and applied AFP’s evidence-based, decision maker-centric advocacy approach to strengthen their local family planning efforts.
Advance Family Planning’s (AFP’s) five new case studies illustrate the advocacy efforts leading to “quick wins” (discrete policy or funding advancements) achieved in the last year.
In June 2015 Advance Family Planning (AFP) partner Yayasan Cipta Cara Padu (YCCP) expanded their program area to two more districts: Bengkayang (West Kalimantan province) and Kuningan (West Java province). YCCP conducted district assessments and coordinated advocacy meetings between the District Heads and the District Head of the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) to introduce the AFP initiative.
The expansion effort is led by Provincial BKKBN West Kalimantan in Bengkayang and Provincial BKKBN West Java in Kuningan.
In July, Family Planning 2020 awarded Advance Family Planning partner Yayasan Cipta Cara Padu Foundation a Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) grant to support the KB Kencana national family planning revitalization program in Indonesia. The grant will fund advocacy efforts in 8 districts in 4 provinces with some of the greatest family planning needs in the country: East Java, South Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua.
Surya Chandra Surapaty, MPH, PhD, has been appointed the new Chairman of the National Family Planning Coordinating Board in Indonesia. Previously, he was a Member of Parliament from the ruling party PDI-P (Indonesian Democratic Party). He also served as the Chair of Commission VII (Health) in Parliament.
